Maintaining Your Flagstone

2 minute read

General Maintenance

1. Sweep

Or leaf blow the surface lightly. For a clean edge, trim any overhanging weeds or grass.

2. Scrub

If needed, use a soft bristled brush, warm water and standard dish detergent to lightly scrub in a circular motion until stubborn dirt has loosened.

3. Spray

Using the garden hose, rinse the area thoroughly.  Be careful to remove any soap residue.

Stains

Give it some elbow grease.

Below is a link that gives cleaning instructions based on the type of stain you’ve got …

Try a commercial stain remover.

Be sure your chosen product is intended for use on natural stone and compatible with your joint filler.  Always follow the manufacturer’s directions and consider the impact the product may have on the environment.

Speak to a landscape professional about replacing the stained stone.

If all else fails and the stain feels dire enough to invest in, then call in your preferred installer.  Ask their advice and options to replace the stone.

Joint Fillers & Sealants

Soil Joints

Once growth is established your joints should remain stable.  If needed simply compact soil into the joints, leveling it to the stones surface.

Perma-sand

To repair your perma-sand joints we first need to find out which product was used during the installation.  Read the manufacturer instructions.  Instructions can vary depending on the brand and type used.

Carefully educate yourself on applying the new perma-sand or hire a landscape professional.  Failing to properly use perma-sand products may result in staining.

Gravel

To ensure a seamless finish we need to match any new materials to the type and size that was used at installation.  If your not sure, take a small sample to your local landscape supply yard.

The wonderful news about natural stone is that it is durable and should last a life time.  Use these steps to keep your patio looking new for all the years to come.

This above advice is not intended as a complete guide for maintaining real stone patios and pathways.  Homeowners should always follow product user instructions, guides and warnings as provided by the products they use and consult a landscape professional.  Any product may have the ability to cause discoloration, deterioration or damage to stone, its sealers, fillers or base.
